SINCE 1995
On That Day, We Did Not Only Lose
Creative direction for “SINCE 1995,” a special edition produced by Kobe Shimbun on its 120th anniversary. Reflecting on the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the project aimed not only to preserve the memory of loss but also to recognize the progress inscribed in society since then.
Twenty-three years on, legal reforms, volunteer culture, seismic infrastructure upgrades, and new disaster technologies have all become strengths for the future. As much as, or even more than, what was lost, countless systems and cultural practices have been built by our own hands. This accumulation tells the story of a society that has moved forward with resilience.
The layout was divided into two sections. The upper half featured 11 symbolic motifs born after the quake, each with captions. The lower half expressed the quake’s impact with a solid black rectangle, its emptiness countered by the tagline and “SINCE 1995” at the bottom, quietly marking the years built from darkness and highlighting what emerged because of that day.
あの日、私たちは失ったばかりではない
創刊120周年を迎えた神戸新聞が制作した別刷特集「SINCE 1995」のクリエイティブ。1995年の阪神・淡路大震災を振り返り、喪失を記憶にとどめつつ、その後の社会に刻まれた歩みを見つめ直すことを目指しました。
震災から23年。防災法制の整備、ボランティア文化の定着、インフラの耐震化、新たな防災技術の開発など、一つひとつが未来を支える力となっています。失ったものの大きさと同じくらい、あるいはそれ以上に、数多くの仕組みや文化を自ら築いてきた。その積み重ねこそが、悲しみを超えて歩んできた社会の力強さを物語ります。
紙面は上下二部構成とし、上部には震災後に誕生した11の象徴的モチーフを撮影し、名称と解説を添付。下部では大震災の衝撃を余白のない黒の矩形で表現し、左下のタグラインと「SINCE 1995」の文字が暗闇から積み重ねられた年月を静かに刻み、“あの日があったからこそ生まれたもの”に光を当てました。
