Between Nature and Artificiality

Created in my third year at university, “gdns.” was submitted to the UNIQLO Creative Award. At first glance, the T-shirt appears to feature a casual, abstract paint stroke, yet upon closer look another image begins to emerge.

The motif was the “hedge” at the university entrance—an intersection of geometric, man-made structure and the organic vitality of nature. This tension was overlaid onto the relationship between the accidental and the deliberate, resulting in an expression wavering between the figurative and the abstract.

The work received the Top Selection Award, and the commercialized T-shirt was sold at UNIQLO stores nationwide. It was my first experience of witnessing a design I created circulate broadly in society, giving me a sense of its dynamism.

自然と人工のあわい

大学3年時に制作し、UNIQLO Creative Award に応募した作品「gdns.」。一見、無造作なペイントに見えながら、よく見ると別のイメージが立ち現れる仕掛けを込めたTシャツです。

モチーフとしたのは、大学のエントランスにあった「生垣」。幾何学的に整えられた人工の構築と、有機的に繁る自然の生命力。そのせめぎあいを「無造作と作為」の関係に重ね、具象と抽象の狭間に揺らぐ表現へと昇華しました。

結果、トップセレクション賞を受賞し、商品化されたTシャツは全国のユニクロ店舗に並びました。携わったデザインが社会に流通するダイナミズムを感じた瞬間でした。
