Unconscious Song
A Device for Generating New Words
Graduation project “Unconscious Song,” created in my fourth year at university, explores the finite and infinite nature of language. Rooted in a recurring drive for new combinations and fresh perspectives, the work examines the foundations of expression itself.
Language helps us cut through the world’s chaos and assign meaning—but over time, the links between words and meanings can grow habitual. This project proposes a mechanism that preserves linguistic structure while subtly shifting the relationship between form and meaning, automatically generating new words.
Appearing as lines of varying length, the generated words sometimes take on a poetic cadence. By introducing small deviations into familiar language, the work disrupts rigid perception and opens a path to creativity beyond the everyday.
The project received the Mitsuo Katsui Prize from Mitsuo Katsui—one of Japan’s leading graphic designers and then professor emeritus at Musashino Art University—offering a quiet sense of confidence at the threshold of entering society.
新しいことばを自動生成する装置
大学4年次の卒業制作「Unconscious Song」は、言語がもつ有限性と無限性を主題に、表現の基盤そのものを探る試みです。制作の中で常に求めていた「新しい組み合わせ」や「新鮮な視点」を手がかりに、言葉が生まれる仕組みへと関心を広げました。
言語は世界の混沌を切り分け、意味を与えるための装置である一方で、言葉の形と意味の結びつきは次第に慣習化し、硬直していきます。本作では、言語構造を崩さずに“形”と“意味”の関係をわずかにずらし、新しい言葉を自動生成するメカニズムをデザインしました。
生成された言葉は長さの異なる行として現れ、ときに詩のようなリズムを帯びます。日常の言語に小さな逸脱を差し込み、固定化した知覚に揺らぎを与えることで、日常の外側へと創造性の通路をひらきます。
本作は、グラフィックデザイナーであり武蔵野美術大学名誉教授でもあった勝井三雄氏より、勝井三雄賞を受賞しました。社会へ踏み出す直前に得たこの評価は、つくり手として歩み始めるための静かな確信となりました。
