Unconscious Song
A Device for Generating New Words
Created in my fourth year at university, my graduation project “Unconscious Song” explores both the finite and infinite nature of language. I realized that in creative work I was always seeking “new combinations” and “fresh perspectives,” which led me to examine the foundations of expression itself.
Language allows us to cut through the world’s chaos and assign meaning, yet these ties often grow stale. This project designs a mechanism that, without breaking linguistic structures, subtly shifts the link between word forms and meanings to automatically generate new words. Appearing in lines of varying lengths, they sometimes take on the tone of poetry, bringing unexpected brilliance to rigid perceptions and opening paths to creativity beyond the everyday.
The project received the Mitsuo Katsui Prize from Mitsuo Katsui, one of Japan’s foremost graphic designers and then professor emeritus at Musashino Art University. This recognition, given just before I stepped into society, offered a quiet sense of confidence as I began my path as a creator.
新しいことばを自動生成する装置
大学4年時に制作した卒業制作“無意識のうた”。言葉の有限性と無限性に着目し、言語と表現の新たな可能性を探る試みです。創作において「新しい組み合わせ」や「新鮮な捉え方」を模索している自分に気づき、表現よりもその根幹を探究したいと考えました。
言葉は、混沌とした世界を人間が切り取り、意味を与えたもの。私たちの認識も行動も言葉によって形づくられますが、その結びつきはときに惰性化し、新鮮さを失います。本作では、言語の構造を壊さず、既成の語形と語義の関係をわずかにずらすことで、新しい言葉を自動生成する仕組みを設計しました。様々な形式で生まれる言葉は、ときに詩のような佇まいで硬直した認識に輝きをもたらし、日常を超えた新しい創造の手がかりとなります。
本作は、日本を代表するグラフィックデザイナーであり、当時武蔵野美術大学の名誉教授であった勝井三雄氏より「勝井三雄賞」を授与。社会へ踏み出す直前に頂いた励ましは、クリエイターとして歩む自分に静かな確信を与えてくれたように思います。
