Unconscious Song

A Device for Generating New Words

Created in my fourth year at university, “Unconscious Song” explores the finite yet infinite nature of language and the possibilities it opens for expression. I realized that in creative work I am always searching for “new combinations” and “fresh perspectives,” and wanted to revisit the foundations of expression itself.

Language allows us to cut through the world’s chaos and assign meaning, yet those connections often grow stale. This project designs a mechanism that slightly shifts the ties between existing word forms and meanings, without breaking linguistic structures, to generate new words. Emerging in one line, three lines, or multiple lines, they sometimes take on the tone of poetry, bringing unexpected brilliance to rigid perceptions and suggesting paths to creativity beyond the everyday.

The project was honored with the “Mitsuo Katsui Prize” by Mitsuo Katsui, one of Japan’s foremost graphic designers and then professor emeritus at Musashino Art University. That recognition offered a quiet conviction as I stepped into my career as a creator.

新しいことばを自動生成する装置

大学4年時に制作した卒業制作“無意識のうた”。本作は、言葉の有限性と無限性に着目し、言語と表現の新たな可能性を探る試みです。アイデアやデザインを考える際、常に自分が「新しい組み合わせ」や「新鮮な捉え方」を模索していることに気づき、何かを表現する前に、今一度その根幹を探究してみたいと考えたことが出発点でした。

言葉は、混沌とした世界を人間が切り取り、意味を与えたもの。私たちの認識も行動も言葉によって形づくられていますが、その結びつきはときに惰性化し、新鮮さを失います。本作では、言語の構造を壊さず、既成の語形と語義の関係をわずかにずらすことで、新しい言葉を自動生成する仕組みを設計しました。1行、3行、複数行と、様々な形式で次々と生まれる言葉は、ときに詩のような佇まいを見せながら、硬直した認識に思いがけない輝きをもたらします。それは、私たちにとって日常を超えた新しい創造の手がかりとなるにちがいありません。

本作は、日本を代表するグラフィックデザイナーであり、当時武蔵野美術大学の名誉教授であった勝井三雄氏より「勝井三雄賞」を授与されました。社会へ踏み出す直前に受け取った励ましは、クリエイターとして歩む自分に、静かな確信を与えてくれたように思います。
